Support for struggling readers

The art of reading does not come naturally, and not all pupils have mastered it before arriving at Eden School. We take a deliberate and intentional approach to reading development. Pupils who are below chronological age in their reading have access to bespoke reading interventions delivered by learning support assistants.

Interventions cover:

  • Reading fluency
  • Reading comprehension
  • Decoding
  • Inference / deduction
  • Phonics

Equipping all staff with the skills and knowledge they need to teach pupils to become accomplished readers. Providing opportunities for pupils to read during curriculum time to create lifelong readers. Providing specific support for pupils who struggled to read through highly structured interventions, linked to their reading data. Incentives and rewards which engage pupils and raise the profile of reading. Ensuring reading ability and areas of difficulty are identified through high quality assessment.
