Food Technology

The Food Technology department at Eden School aims to provide pupils with not just a basic working knowledge of food preparation, personal hygiene and cooking to a budget but an opportunity to explore and experiment with a variety of cuisines.

As an inclusive school we provide ingredients to ensure that every child has the opportunity to participate.

Children are encouraged throughout lessons to adapt ingredients and change recipes to suit their own and their families personal tastes and needs, thus ensuring that foods can be enjoyed by all.

The children have to include literacy, numeracy, social interaction and practical skills as part of their ongoing achievement.  

In KS2 students develop Key Skills required in preparing, cooking and baking simple dishes using the correct equipment and ingredients.  They will also get used to being in and around a kitchen environment.

In Years 7 and 8  students will learn Basic Skills in the Kitchen, Food Safety and Basic Nutrition. They will work towards an ASDAN Foodwise Certificate.  The learning will be Practical based and will include Dough Making (Pizza), Pasta based dishes, Fajitas, Curry, baking cakes and biscuits.  Children are encouraged to experiment and become more independent with recipes to consolidate their knowledge and ensure that these become transferable skills which they easily take home with them.

Year 9, 10 and 11.  –  ASDAN, Level 2 Certificate in Nutrition and GCSE.

Students who decide to study Food Tech as an Option will take part in theory lessons and learn about nutrition, working to a set budget, planning and presenting for Special Events, and the importance of good and bad food choices.

Students who don’t choose it as an option will still receive a weekly food technology lesson to develop their skills and confidence in the kitchen taking part in both cooking and baking.  They will make burgers, kievs, stir-frys, pies and bake a variety of cakes, biscuits and desserts.
